The submission form (and the new feedback form and error form) now is processed on the Web server, while in the past the form was processed on your computer and sent using your email program.
This means that now the submission of a document reference will work whatever your operating system is, you don't even need an email client anymore.
Moreover, the server-based form processing is a main prerequisite for the addition of a real database.
-
The unreliable links to PDF-files have been replaced by Digital Object Identifiers:
DOI's are different from commonly used pointers to material such as the URL (Uniform Resource Locator), the usual means of referring to Web material - because they identify an object, not the place where the object is located.
URLs must change if the object moves, otherwise the link will be broken.
Moreover, the PDF-links quite frequently depend on the subscribing institution, and thus may differ from university to university.
The power of the DOI system is its function as a routing or resolution system:
Because digital content may change ownership or location over the course of its useful life, the DOI system uses a distributed central directory.
When a user clicks on a DOI, a message is sent to the central directory where the current address associated with that DOI appears.
This location is sent back to the user, enabling redirection within a browser to this particular internet address.
The user simply sees the content itself, or further information about the entity, as well as information on how to obtain it.
